The North East Railway History
- A Regional History of the Railways of Great Britain
- Volume 9 - The East Midlands
- The East Midlands is a richly diverse part of England stretching from the bleak High Peak district of Derbyshire eastwards to bracing Skegness and south to the lush pastures of Northamptonshire and the outer reaches of the London metropolis. It's industry is as varied as its landscape from hats at Luton to steel at Scunthorpe and coal mining in much of its central area. The railway has helped these industries grow and in turn stimulated further rail development as rival schemes were promoted. By the turn of the century the region was traversed by the four great trunk rail routes from london to the North, bounded on the west by the LNWR and to the east by the Great Northern. There was a criss-cross tangle of secondary and branch lines, with enormous contrasts between the industrial lines of the Midland coalfield and Humberside and those of agricultural south Lincolnshire.
- Robin Leleux places the railways in the setting of a social and economic background and analyses their impact, area by area, from the pioneer lines to the recent closure of many routes and the modernisation of those remaining.
- This is the second and substantially revised edition reflecting almost a decade of rapid railway change in the East Midlands
