The Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway
- The Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway
- Volume 2
- This volume completes the history of the Lancashire & Yorkshire Railway. In Volume 1 the growth of the principal sections of the system was described. The various extensions, cut-off lines, widenings and other improvements together with jointly owned or operated lines are dealt with in the first five chapters of this volume. The remaining five chapters describe electrification, maritime activities, the locomotive, carriage and wagon departments and workshops, with much fresh biographical information on the engineers, and finally operation and administration. In the course of his researchers the author unearthed portraits of engineers such as Jenkins, Hurst, Yates, Fay, Barton Wright and Hoy which never had never been published and which are included in this volume together with many other rare illustrations. A large number of appendices include a full chronology giving all opening dates and a list of all Acts of Parliment concerned with the LYR. A third volume is in preparation to present a history of the locomotives and rolling stock
