The Somerset and Dorset in the Fifties
- The Somerset and Dorset in the Fifties
- Volume 2 1955-1959
- Part One of The Somerset and Dorset in the Fifties covered the period from 1950 to 1954. Part Two now takes the reader from 1955 to 1959. During these five years traffic over the Somerset and Dorset, both passenger and freight, kept up well, and to the railway enthusiasts delight, the constantly changing variety in motive power continued unabated. In fact by the end of the fifties, the only member of pre-nationalisation on the S&D was the LNER
- But in 1958 an event occured which was to have fatal consequences for the Somerset and Dorset - in a reshuffle of regional boundaries the Western Region gained a dominating control over the line. Initially there was little to show for the change, and no hint given of the fate that was to befall this enchanting line. The 1959 dawned with the S&D stil an important and busy line, but as the year drew to a close, how many would have beleived that the SOmerset and Dorset had less than seven more years to live?
