The Class 52s - OPC
- The Class 52s
- At a meeting at Swindon on 16th November 1959 it was agreed to build a total of 74 diesel locomotives. British Rail came to know them as D1000 class. The railway enthusiasts nicknamed them the Wezzies. These wewre the Class 52 Western class C-C diesel hydraulics built at Swindon and Crewe works.
- This is a personal tribute to the class which, although withdrawn in the 1970s by British Rail, remain as popular as ever with enthusiasts and modellers. The authour, as a professional photographer, found these locomotives very photogenic and made a detailed study of the class, particularly in their last few years of main line service.
- The many liveries carried, including detail variations, are all recorded and depicted in a series of drawings specially prepared for this work. The numerous rail tours hauled by Westerns in their final years are also recorded, together with full details of the seven locomotives that survive today.
