- Hertfordshire is not usually reckoned among the counties of prime interest to the industrial archaeologist. Yet its important malting industry has been carried on since the Middle Ages; it was the home of modern papermaking techniques; it has been called 'the greatest concentration of printers in the world', and England's first turnpike road originated there. Hertfordshire was also the birthplace of Sir Henry Bessemer, the ancestral seat of the Duke of Bridgwater, the last home of John Loudon McAdam and at one time the home of Sir Nigel Gresley.
- Despite the disruptive advance of London industry into the countryside, Hertfordshire contains a great variety of relics of its own industries which ranged from medieval charcoal burning and wood turning, to silk throwing and calico printing; from the cottage industry of straw plaiting and straw-hat making, to brewing and malting. All these and many others the author describes and lists in interesting detail, following the main text with a comprehensive gazetter. To people both inside and outside Hertfordshire the book will be something of an eye-opener.
