- Editorial
- This issue of Locomotives Illustrated, No.169 concludes the survey of the locomotives built at Ashford in 1900 to 1952. The SR electrification greatly reduced the number of steam locomotives required or the facilities for their maintenance with the result that all three SR works, Ashford, Brighton and Eastleigh only built 279 engines ordered between 1923 and World War II.
- Ashford's contribution was 101 including the 50 'N' class 2-6-0s erected from parts manufactured at the Woolwich Arsenal. In addition Ashford built three diesel-electric shunters. After 1939 wartime production was restricted to 20 'Q1' 0-6-0s and 14 LMS '8F' 2-8-0s. After which Ashford did not build any more steam locomotives. Possibly a bright future beckoned with the construction of three electric locomotives, two main line diesel-electric locomotives and 27 shunters but nationalisation brought this work to an end with Brighton finishing the third main line diesel.
