North Staffordshire Album
The North Staffordshire, known locally as 'The Knotty', was a small railway. It carried only 10 million passengers a year and its merchandise traffic amounted to less than 600,000 tons. As a carrier of minerals, however, it moved more than 3 million tons annually.
But it was a line of character and very much a family concern. Only a handful of the larger companies could equal the aesthetic charm of its station architecture; fewer still could claim the formation of a staff social association after the grouping of 1923; and none has been immortalised by a musical documentary.
George Dow, leading railway historian, who retired from British Rail in 1968, was Divisional Manager at Stoke-on-Trent for the last years of his career. He played a part in the task of transforming much of the old North Staffordshire system into the modern, high speed electric railway it is today.
