- In its railway heyday, the small town of Bury could claim to have its fair share of railway features. There were two railway sations, a steam motive power depot, an electric car depot, ten signal boxes (within an area bounded by Gigg Mill, Loco Jct, Bury Gas Works and Torrington Jct), two goods stations and ample siding accommodation.
- The bulk of these were located on the western side of the town, on the left bank of the river Irwell and were clustered around the crossroads formed by the intersection of the south to north and east to west routes.
