- During the 1950's, the landscape around Bolton was vastly different to that of more recent times. There was a great deal of Industry and the town was surrounded by cotton mills, their chimneys constantly belching thick smoke into the atmosphere. The coal fired power stations of Halliwell and Kearsley also contributed to the "clag", and from those cooling towers, the billowing clouds of steam would drift forever skyward.
- In recording in this volume some of those happenings of forty or so years ago, The author has sought to illustrate what life was like at a running shed and on the footplate. Both were crude, dirty workplaces, and whilst footplate work called for a high degree of responsibility, there were moments when both humour and tragedy were encountered.
