- For two companies whose arrival in the town was within days of each other, (so far as official openings were concerned), the respective developments and priorities in the operation of their rival stations differed markedly. To the Midland Railway Company, Buxton became a depot of strategic importance, as explained in the previous book, Scenes From the Past 7 The Railway from Buxton to Bakewell, Matlock & Ambergate, but to the London & North Western Railway, it was of lesser concern, despite the fact that a desire to compete with the Midland Railway for traffic was the reason for the conception of their station.
- In taking over the Cromford & High Peak Railway, the LNWR had acquired a small engine shed at Ladmanlow, serving the Hopton Top, Bunsall Top section of that line, but they had no direct connection into Buxton other than via Whaley Bridge. Although the Midland Railway kept a stud of reasonably up to date locomotives at their depot, in the early days the LNWR used their line for putting out to grass various aged and inherited locomotives yet, as the years progressed, and Buxton became as important to the LNWR as it did to the Midland company, there was a change of policy, and the motive power and rolling stock used by the Premier Line was the most up to date that company owned, indeed, some coaches were especially designed for the line.
