- In this book, the first to deal with its subject, the Iron Curtain is raised to reveal the fascinating variety of steam power that work the other side. The thirteen chapters begin with two on the old Austrian and Prussian empires which at one time covered much of Eastern Europe. These are followed by chapters on Hungary and the Balkan countries, the new states formed after 1919, and finally miscellaneous and wartime engines.
- Brief details are given of most of the numerous locomotive classes, but particular emphasis has been placed on types built by or for the present day group of nine eastern countries. The development of each country's power to meet its own special requirements, the quantities and dates built, together with reference to their more interesting technical features, and spheres of operation, if any, are dealt with concisely so that the maximum of information is compressed into the minimum of space. Outlines of the upheavals of whole countries and their railways and locomotives are given, although this is a story which may well never be fully known.
- Illustrations include 100 photographs, mostly of locomotives in service, and a number of line drawings which, with tables of dimensions, provide an interesting comparison of the locomotives concerned, which range from single-driver tanks to immense twelve-coupled and articulated classes.
