The Burton & Ashby Light Railway makes an attractive subject about which to write, being an unusual offshoot of a great railway company and having about it the aura and tradition, as well as the striking livery. The line is also something of a puzzle in that it was in competition with the local railway system, especially at Gresley and thus with its own interests, though purists would argue that the passengers gained from the B & A in its early days were chiefly local oneswho had little to gain from an infrequent train service in any case.
