- Notwithstanding the magnificence justly attributed to it by more than one writer, the Midland was the railway of the ordinary man. No other railway system did as much for the comfort of the third class traveller. Indeed over the years the Midland carriage earned an international reputation for excellence in design, materials, construction and finish, the well groomed, crimson lake unity of the Midland passenger train, express or local, being a joy to behold and ride in.
- This scholarly account is based on the work of the late Ralph Lacy whose notes reveal that as long ago as 1933 he was measuring former MR carriages at St.Pancras. Sadly he died before completing the manuscript to which he had dedicated so much of his life and his widow asked railway historian George Dow to complete it.

- This volume, volume one, covers carriages of the predecessors, the Kirtley era, 1844-73, early Clayton 1873-76, Pullman cars, main line carriages 1877-96 and the clerestory hallmark, 1896-1901. It is well illustrated and includes a large number of drawings, the majority of which are officials reproduced at 4mm scale along with numerous others at 3mm, 4mm and 7mm scales.
- Volume two, covers main line carriages, 1905-15, elliptical roofed stock, 1915-22, close coupled sets and other local carriages, motor carriages, motor trains and electric trains, slips and saloons, non passeger carrying stock, Anglo Scottish joint stock, 1879-22 together with various appendicies.
