British Rail's Class 47 Co-Co diesel electric locomotives could, until recently, be seen throughout the UK rail network on a wide variety of duties. Introduced in 1962 and known as the Brush/Sulzer Type 4, production continued until 1968. A total of 512 were built, making the 47s the most numerous main line type on BR.
Many detail changes have been made to various members of the class, resulting in sub classifications into parts 47/0, 47/3, 47/4, 47/7 and 47/9. Also many livery variations, namings and re-namings have added interest to the class which has a large following among modern traction enthusiasts.
Although withdrawals had taken place by 1987, a programme of refurbishment has ensured the majority of the 47s had a long and useful life ahead of them.
