English Electric Main Line Diesel Locomotives of British Rail
- BR English Electric Main Line Diesels
- Locomotive Studies

- When the British Railways post-war modernisation plan was launched in the 1950s it was fitting that English Electric, with an ancestry going back to such pioneer locomotive building firms as Robert Stephenson & Co. and Vulcan Foundry, should have been chosen from the start to supply locomotives and equipment. Indeed with years of experience in electric traction, the building of line service diesels for export and diesel shunters fro home railways, the main line prototype diesels built by the LMS and Southern railways after the second world war, and an ability to supply all the major components for diesel-electric traction from within its own group, English Electric was well placed to cater for BR's diesel requirements.
- Despite the early multiplicity of diesel types from many sources, today(1976) English Electric locomotives total well over half the BR fleet with some classes the longest serving on BR. Brian Webb tells the story of the part played by EE main line locmotives in BR modernisation and discusses their design, development, performance in service, the achievements and the types that might have been, class by class in a style acceptable to enthusiasts, locomotive historians and engineers alike.
