- The Gresely Pacifics will always remain one of the most famous steam locmotive families ever to run the rails. The original design was developed on the Great Northern Railway, and could be described as a blend of the merits of the large boilered Doncaster Atlantics and Gresley's own three cylinder Moguls of 1920. Completed in the last year of the GNR the new Doncaster Pacifics were immediately rivalled in size and haulage capacity by those of the North Eastern Railway, and inevitably compared with the only previous pacific to run in Great Britain, Churchward's GWR No.111 The Great Bear.
- In this book O.S.Nock describes the inception of the Gresley Pacifics and discusses their design with the aid of a magnificent series of detail drawings. He describes the comparative trials against the NER Pacifics, and the Interchange Running with the GWR. He traces the subsequent develoment of the Gresley design, with improved valve gears and higher boiler pressures, and thence to the consummation of the non streamlined variety in the notable acceleration of train services from the 1932 onwards, and to the 100mph running in 1935. Mr Nock's account is drawn from constant observation and travelling on the line, and from much experience on the footplate.
