This book is a companion volume to Mr Nock's Southern Steam, LNER Steam and LMS Steam, and covers the story of Great Western practice in the years following the grouping of 1923. At the time the former independent railways of south and central Wales were brought into the fold of the enlarged Great Western, and special attention was given to the provision of motive power for South Wales, and for its maintenance by the modernisation of the former Rhymney Railway Works at Caerphilly.
At Swindon the policy of standardisation formulated by Churchward was continued first by Collett and then by Hawksworth, resulting in the production of such famous engine designs as the Castles, Kings, Halls, Granges and Counties. Mr Nock shows how each of these fitted into the general scheme of standardisation and discusses the basic features of their design and working. The changes needed to meet post-war conditions from 1946 onwards are fully described.
