The Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway
- The Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway
- A Concise History

- If one wished to point to a single example of British railway enterprise in the pre-war era in which local men, cognisant of the business of the districts they served, built up an organisation that was supremely attuned to the needs of passenger and freight transport, one could choose the Lancashire & Yorkshire as an outstanding case. Beginning as an unconnected miscellany of local railways it was skilfully established as a colossus, yet scarcely penetrating beyond the two counties united in its name.
- In this book O.S.Nock shows how this indigenous characteristic permeated the development of engineering, and commercial activities, and typified directors and staff alike. He shows how this great railway was developed and served by great men; so that the names of Armytage, Aspinall, Marriott, and Watson were almost synonymous with the initials LYR. Its eventual amalgamation, on equal terms, with the London and North Western Railway, is an adequate expression of the status to which it had attained.
